FLA. Congresswoman Charged With Fraud, Tax Crimes

The Jacksonville Democrats is accused of a fraud conspiracy, filing false tax returns.

U.S. Rep. Corrine Brown, a Democrat who represents Jackonsville, Fla., was indicted by federal prosecutors on tax charges as part of a conspiracy and fraud scheme involving a fraudulent education charity.

Brown, 69, and her chief of staff, Elias “Ronnie” Simmons, 50, of Laurel, Md., were charged in a 24-count indictment with participating in a conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud, multiple counts of mail and wire fraud, concealing material facts on required financial disclosure forms, theft of government property, obstruction of the due administration of the internal revenue laws, and filing false tax returns.

Brown is also charged with engaging in tax obstruction from 2008 to 2014 and, in some years, filing false returns.
